POSITION SUMMARY

The Quality Assurance Technician works independently and coordinates essential Quality Assurance / Quality Control functions from raw materials and current Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) verification through finished product release.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collect and coordinate information and prepare regulatory documentation for submission to regulatory agencies.
  • Maintain regulatory files and database.
  • Review labels for compliance to regulatory requirements.
  • Audit, implement and manage systems to ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements
  • Assist in the investigation of customer complaints to determine root causes, provide responses, and determine corrective and/or preventive actions.
  • Support Production as needed including line start-up and ingredient and finished product approval.
  • Implement food safety and QA/QC practices for all aspects of food manufacturing such as sampling procedures, test plans and product specifications. Ensure practices are consistently applied.
  • Review all data obtained during quality assurance activities to insure consistency with New Age Meats policies and procedures.
  • Enforce and verify sanitation standards to ensure food safety integrity according to applicable laws and statutes.
  • Investigates and resolves issues identified during quality assurance activities and keeps management team abreast of any significant issues or developments identified.
  • Assist in the investigation and resolution of customer complaints.
  • Supervise other employees engaged in quality assurance activities.
  • Assists with the control and release of withheld and retained products.
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret data.
  • Develop and prepare clean, concise, and comprehensive studies and reports.
  • Communicate effectively orally and in-writing.
  • Work with minimal general work direction in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Perform and assume additional responsibilities as assigned to accomplish goal

Required

  • Minimum 3-5 years practical experience in a quality, laboratory or GMP regulated production environment in 21 CFR regulated industries (i.e., food, dietary supplements, personal care, medical devices, etc.).  
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills to function as part of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Excellent organizational skills with accuracy and attention to detail

Technical Skills Required

  • Familiarity / knowledge of GMPs, HACCP/food safety, laboratory safety, GFSI
  • Experience working with version-controlled forms, procedures, policies, and workflows.

Education/Training Required

  • Four-year college degree in a technical/scientific discipline (Food, Physical, or Biological Sciences preferred).

 WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Sitting 30%; Walking 30%; Standing 40%.
  • Frequently lift and/or move up to 10 lbs. and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 lbs.
  • Exposure to warehouse and manufacturing equipment hazards.

Senior Food Process Engineer – R&D

We are looking for an experienced and ambitious R&D Senior Food Process Engineer to join our vibrant team and grow with us and work efficiently to become a seasoned professional in this field. The R&D Senior Food Process Engineer will report to the R&D Food Process Manager; and collaborates with research and manufacturing divisions of the company.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the process development and process capability assessment to ensure product design aligns with process capability. Identify risks and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Identify, develop, and evaluate methods and process technologies from bench to pilot scale to ensure effective and efficient process capabilities.
  • Collaborate with other R&D groups (and Manufacturing when needed) to develop process and equipment specifications for existing and new equipment or production lines including any improvement and/or changes. Solicit, evaluate, and select external vendors and other service providers.
  • Develop, present, and communicate preliminary capital proposals of new processing technology, equipment, or cost reduction opportunities including determination of ROI and other benefits, process or equipment specifications, and estimated capital investment and production capacity and attainment.
  • Document all work according to established procedures and guidelines and prepare various project reports.
  • Assist with development of training programs for operations personnel in executing and operating new processes and processing equipment in the areas of operation maintenance and sanitation.

 

Requirements & Qualifications:

  • A B.S. degree in Food Process Engineering or Manufacturing, Chemical, Biological Engineering, or other related fields; advanced degree a plus.
  • Minimum 6-8 years of direct experience in food product development, especially experience with animal- and plant-based industry highly desired. Pilot-scale plant operations experience required.
  • Ability to understand root causes of problems and develop solutions is critical to success. Fact-based reasoning and recommendation is essential. Incorporates a high level of technical knowledge & expertise into decision making.
  • Ability to adapt to working both in collaborative team environment and alone.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization. Effective interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge and experience in R&D product development flow from concept to product launch, especially to achieve performance, quality, and safety targets, deployed within regulatory and industry best practice frameworks such as USDA, FDA, GFSI, etc.
  • Strong in statistical analysis and Statistical Process Control (SPC)
  • Ability to develop and execute Commissioning, Qualification, Verification, and Validation protocols.
  • Ability to develop BFD, PFD, P&ID, etc; perform mass balance, etc; perform time studies to optimize cycle time, makespan, etc; perform pay-back calculations and write preliminary capital proposals.
  • Experience with ASABE, NIST, ASTM, AOAC methods.
  • Experience with popular brands of industrial food process equipment, analytical instruments, in-line sensors, and PLC automation and control.
  • Experience with coordinating 3rd party collaborations, services, etc
  • Ability and willingness to work flexible hours and days as needed.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 lb occasionally.

  • Demonstrable ability to apply general analytical and problem solving skills to food systems
  • Comfort with a fast paced start-up environment and remote communication
  • Bonus points for QA (GFSI), and statistics (DOE, RSM, GLM, etc)

IDEAL EXPERIENCE:

Sr Manager/ Director – Food Product R&D

The Senior Manager role is a high visibility role with strong growth potential that will lead the day-to-day of the Food R&D team & corresponding future platforms bringing novel ingredients into product and commercialization readiness.

 

Duties Include

  • Report directly into CTO, managing new product platform development and commercialization readiness
  • Lead, and roll-up the sleeves, with a technical and food-oriented team, inclusive of formulations & applications, sensory and culinary and work hands on to create the most delicious products.
  • Oversee day-to-day operations with 3-4 direct reports – driving clarity for them to manage workstreams to critical path commercialization timelines in line with key milestones and corresponding SOPs
  • Demonstrate and develop team with strong cross-functional collaboration mindset with production, packaging and upstream biomaterials teams everyday
  • Collaborate with Marketing to develop product pipeline over time and foster capturing product preferences and attributes into product integrations, coordinating testing events and refinements accordingly in the day-to-day
  • Have a good grasp of concepts with culinary, food sensory, biology, engineering, commercialization
  • Critically think and expand on our understanding of novel material properties of our ingredients and novel ingredients and how they interact with other more commonplace ingredients
  • Ensure that products from inception to launch and beyond meet product specs and are upheld, partnering with QA/QC and regulatory

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • MSc or PhD in Food Science, Biology, Chemistry, or related field.
  • At least 8+ years in the food industry developing and demonstrated track record in successfully developing and launching consumer meat and/or food products in CPG/Foodservice
  • 3+ years’ experience managing at least two (2) direct reports (i.e. Scientist I or II)
  • Well-rounded experience with deep understanding technically of textures, material science, flavors and overall appreciation for the consumer experience
  • Experience working with novel ingredients and technical food science toolkit both in terms of ingredients as well as instrumentation
  • Creative thinker using a multitude of approaches to solve problems and distill into organized next step actions to lead development projects
  • Able to navigate both FDA and USDA regulations for meat, poultry, and seafood production
  • Thrives in fast paced environment and experience or interest in working in an innovative startup

IDEAL EXPERIENCE:

  • Develop formulations that can utilize plant-based ingredients and cell-cultured ingredients. Develop test matrices and recipe iterations with DOE

  • Verify and validate formulations (in collaboration with other teams) via qualitative and quantitative methods

Culinary Science / Food-Tech Internship

Culinary Process Engineering Intern

New Age Meats is a fast-growing Berkeley based cellular agriculture company. We create delicious meat made from animal cell culture instead of animal slaughter – healthier for humans, animals, and the planet. We are excited about bringing the best automation and data science practices into stem cell biology – developing enhanced cell lines, media, and bioreactor scaling – to bring cultivated meat to market faster and more affordably.

We are looking to supplement our research and manufacturing efforts with a team of interns. An internship at New Age Meats will last for a duration of 6 months and is a full time position.

QUALIFICATION

High School or Diploma or related Degree from a college or a university completed or in progress

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • Experience working in academic or industrial lab will be preferred
  • Hands on experience in a kitchen and/or food laboratory preferred 
  • Intermediate knowledge of cooking methods or processes preferred 
  • Ability to contribute in a fast paced, research and manufacturing environment
  • Operate with moderate supervision and have meticulous attention to detail
  • Experience with literature research and design of experiments is desirable
  • Basic to intermediate knowledge of computer skills including Microsoft Word and Excel and working with Google Drive is required.
