Job Details

We’re expanding our food grade organism bioprocessing team and are looking for a Fermentation Scientist to provide technical support toward problem solving and enhancement of fermentation capabilities. The Fermentation Scientist will conduct bench-scale research pertaining to strain evaluation, media and process development, and scale-up/scale-down of manufacturing processes to support the upstream development and deployment of NAMs process technology. The scientist will make an immediate impact by designing experiments and interpreting data that influences the development of our high value products. This individual should be well-versed in fermentation techniques and process design, fermentation scale-down and hardware platforms, and fermentation automation and measurement systems. The successful candidate will play a key role expanding our laboratory scale capabilities and advancing the state of New Age Meats fermentation science.

 

Duties Include

  • Design, set-up, and execute fermentation experiments in benchtop bioreactors ranging in size from 1 mL to 10 L.
  • Develop and enhance small-scale fermentation assays.
  • Collect, analyze, and present on-line and off-line data from fermentation experiments.
  • Design experiments to answer questions and drive decisions and improvements.
  • Explore technology advancement opportunities, carry out evaluations of new technology, and support implementation efforts.
  • Improve upon existing systems and incorporate new methods of analyses.
  • Develop assays to measure and analyze samples to gain a deeper understanding of strain behavior, process characterization and performance analyses.
  • Support process transfer to NAMs pilot plant and assist scale-up and tech transfer to CRO/CMO partners.
  • Provide knowledge and insights to inform utility, system, or equipment upgrades or expansions.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workplace.
  • Coach and mentor junior level personnel.

 

Experience Required

  • Broad technical knowledge and lab scale experience in fermentation including strain screening, process development, and analytics.
  • Experience with automated and semi-automated bench scale fermentation equipment including troubleshooting and problem solving
  • Strong understanding of biochemical engineering principles, aerobic fed-batch fermentation processes, bioprocess development and optimization, and bioreactor control systems. 
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to effectively prioritize and complete high-quality projects amidst tight timelines and competing deadlines.
  • Ability to establish and maintain excellent record keeping and inventory.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to discuss complex technical concepts with a variety of audiences.
  • Ability to travel as needed to support NAMs technology deployment projects.  
  • Experience using tools and software to analyze large datasets (JMP, Spotfire, etc).
  • Independence, with ability to manage work, actions, and expectations is essential.

Qualifications

  • Educational Background in Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Fermentation, or related engineering or life science discipline with direct hands-on experience operating bioreactors.
  • PhD in a related field and 5 years of relevant industry experience or MS with 8 years of experience.

Process Engineer – Bio R&D

We are looking for an experienced and ambitious R&D Bio Process Engineer to join our vibrant team and grow with us and work efficiently to become a seasoned professional in this field. The R&D Bio Process Engineer will report to the R&D Process Manager; and collaborates with research and manufacturing divisions of the company.

 

Duties Include

  • At the direction of the manager, identify, develop, and evaluate methods and process technologies from bench to pilot scale to ensure effective and efficient process capabilities. Hands-on work will require proficiency in both lab practices/techniques and the pilot plant.
  • Collaborate with other R&D groups (and Manufacturing when needed) to understand and take forward to scale formula and process and equipment. Solicit, evaluate, and select external vendors and other service providers when needed.
  • Document all work according to internal established procedures and guidelines and prepare various project reports. Generate, analyze, summarize, and present experimental data.

Experience Required

  • 3-7 years of direct experience in bio and/or bio-chemical process development, especially experience with animal- or plant-based meat industry highly desired. Pilot-scale plant operations experience required. Scaleup to copackers (co-mans) experience is desired.
  • Ability to understand root causes of problems and develop solutions is critical to success. Fact-based reasoning and recommendations are essential. Incorporates a high level of technical knowledge & expertise into decision making.

  • Ability to develop BFD, PFD, P&ID, etc; perform mass balance, etc; perform time studies to optimize cycle time, makespan, etc; perform pay-back calculations and write preliminary capital proposals.
  • Experience with ASABE, NIST, ASTM, AOAC methods.
  • Experience with popular brands of industrial food process equipment, analytical instruments, in-line sensors, and PLC automation and control.
  • Experience with coordinating 3rd party collaborations, services, etc.
  • Ability and willingness to work flexible hours and days as needed.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 lb. occasionally.

We are looking for an experienced and ambitious R&D Biomaterials Scientist to join our vibrant team and grow with us and work efficiently to become a seasoned professional in this field. The R&D Biomaterials Scientist will report to the Head of Biotech R&D and collaborate with Food R&D research personnel and manufacturing divisions of the company. 

The R&D Biomaterials Scientist will lead the Biomaterials Engineering team in developing biomimetic materials that will further be incorporated into a variety of porcine food products. 

 

Duties Include

  • At the direction of the manager, identify, develop, and evaluate ingredients for microcarrier (cell substrate) development and scale up technologies producing microcarriers that can support cell adhesion, proliferation and differentiation. Hands-on work will require proficiency in lab practices/techniques. Conduct and analyze various design of experiments to optimize materials of interest and introduce functional moieties on the surface of the microcarriers.
  • At the direction of the manager, identify, develop, and evaluate new ingredients and process technologies to scale up the food grade matrix for incorporation into NAM’s products.
  • Work closely with food formulation team and make necessary changes to microcarrier formulations based on performance in final products and sensory attributes
  • Collaborate with other R&D groups (and Manufacturing when needed) to understand and take forward to scale formula and process and equipment. Solicit, evaluate, and select external vendors, universities, and other service providers when needed.
  • Effectively communicate and present experimental results to management and peers
  • Lead a team of 5-10 scientists/engineers and provide technical inputs to a young, highly ambitious team of scientists and engineers
  • Actively involved in designing lab spaces and pilot lab facilities

Scientist I/II – Porcine Cell Engineering

Job Details

We are currently looking to fill a Scientist position within the Division of Porcine Cell Engineering, which is tasked with developing, characterizing and optimizing cell lines and media formulations for cells that will be incorporated in the company’s food products. The Scientist will conduct lab-based experiments as part of research and development and production purposes.  Appointment at Scientist I or II position will be dependent on experience. We are excited about bringing the best automation and data science practices into stem cell biology – developing enhanced cell lines, media, and bioreactor scaling – to bring cultivated meat to market faster and more affordably.

 

Duties Include

  • Use of molecular and cell biological techniques to generate cell lines of interest
  • Ensuring cell lines conform to necessary standards for downstream processes
  • Characterizing cell properties (e.g. growth kinetics, karyotype, gene expression)
  • Monitoring cell lines using flask tracking
  • Optimizing cell culture conditions and media formulations using DOE
  • Maintaining a clean, organized, and safe workplace
  • Coaching and mentoring junior level personnel
  • Developing workflows for various processes

Come change the World with us!  NAM is looking for an experienced, solution-orientated Process Engineer II/III to join our growing Production team.  If you thrive doing methodical process development on mammalian platform systems in a fast paced, fast evolving, and a team player, we would love to talk to you!

 

Duties Include

  • DoE based process development/optimization to facilitate robust cell expansion on lab scale bioreactor operations and cell culture experiments, including testing novel platforms and procedures.
  • Experimental design, acquire and analysis of experimental data.  recording all experimental designs, data, observations, and results in an electronic laboratory notebook or hardcopy notebook
  • This role will be expected to present experimental summaries, conclusions, and next stage experiments to team members and the larger group in an organized, and logical manner, both verbally and visually.
  • Contribute to the design, development, and operation of fed-batch, batch and perfusion processes
  • Establish procedures for: media batching, inoculation, culture, and harvest of bioreactors
  • Contribute to delivering a process amenable to GMP operations
  • Author Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Batch Production Records (BPRs), and other quality/R&D documentation as needed
  • Managing installation, maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting of process development and automation equipment.
  • Operation and maintenance of process monitoring/analysis equipment like biochemical analyzers
  • Maintain process specific inventory of parts and consumables
  • Contribute to applying established platform approaches and problem-solving skills to rapidly tackle scale up challenges and build robust processes with efficient experimentation.
